A Very Magical Adventure York Enchanted Wizard Quest for Kids

A Very Magical Adventure is one of York’s least known things to do for families. I don’t think they’ve been running all that long but in the October half-term, I decided to book on one of their indoor and outdoor quests to find out what it was all about.

Pre-booking is essential and you need to be booked onto one of their experiences to take part. My son had recently started to be interested in Wizards and he loves Harry Potter. They bill themselves as York’s School of Magic/Halloween tour so this is the tour I booked. They often have themed tours according to the time of year.

The adventure starts with a meeting at St Michael Le Belfry opposite York Minster in the centre of York. Here we met a witch that perhaps seemed a little bad. She disappeared and then two new characters arrived. These were the two that took us on a walking tour.

The walking tour turned into a breakneck speed walk up and down the same two streets. I had hoped that we would see more of York. It was a bit chaotic as we were too big a group for everyone to hear and be able to stand close enough in the busy streets of York. A quieter route may be a better idea as we didn’t see much along the way.

All kids are encouraged to bring along a wand and dress up. They then help cast spells along the way. We then were later joined by a Viking type character. We had no clue what was going on by now but our son loved joining in with his wand and we’d bought him a Harry Potter scarf for the occasion.

After a pretty brief whisk around we entered what was billed as the York School of Magic. In here we all gathered around a table and a witch cast a spell using some Mandrake root. The kids loved this but I had wrongly assumed that the kids would be involved more.

You pay a reasonable price (see below) for the tour but the main sell for them is the drinks and food. After the spell making, you are given allocated tables in a room and the Professor enters the room. You can then choose, or not choose, to purchase some food and drinks. The drinks are from the Potions Cauldron in town so worth the price and the money. You could also purchase some cakes but we’d recently eaten so I bought us all a drink each and a cake just for my son.

Once everyone was served they did one final acting scene with all the characters involved that we’d met along the way. The whole experience lasted for just under 2 hours. My son really loved the whole experience. I definitely think they have some scope for improvement with the walking tour but all in all it was good fun. The actors are all very good and we’d certainly book a tour again in the future. Your kids can also pose for a photo with some of the characters at the end.
