It’s becoming a bit of a family tradition now that we go away for a long weekend just before our son starts back at school. This summer I decided to book somewhere where we could all unwind and just enjoy a slower pace of life. I chose Dacre Lakeside holiday park in East Yorkshire. It’s located about half-way between Beverley and Bridlington.
My husband enjoys fishing and this site advertised a fishing lake. I also noticed other activities in case our son didn’t quite share his Dad’s love for fishing. Sadly, the fishing didn’t go too well (more on that later), we did have a lovely stay but there were niggles which for the price was a bit of a shame.
The first hiccup came with check-in where we had been told a totally different time by Hoseasons so we had to spend an hour in the car. We also had to have our temperatures checked which for a site with individual accomodation I found a little odd.
Lodges at Dacre Lakeside. East Yorkshire
They have a variety of lodges that you can book, some allow pets some don’t. All of their lodges and even their shepherd’s huts have a hot tub. This was a major bonus for us and we went in it everday, sometimes twice a day. The hot tub was well maintained and someone came to check on it every day.
I booked us into a Bulrush waters edge lodge. These can be either on the lake or the pond so you have to ring to specify which you’d prefer. Ours was on the lake so it was perfect for fishing (if we actually even had managed to get a bite!).
The lodge was spotless. We had two bedrooms and it was large and cosy. It felt like a home from home. We even had dressing gowns and two bathrooms/shower rooms. The lodge was well equipped and even had a dishwasher.
The major issue for us is that a vast majority of their lodges are next to an on-site water sewage treatment works. When the wind was blowing in the wrong direction this smelt awful and the smell rarely went away. Some days we didn’t smell it at all so you could stay there and never smell it.
Things To Do – Facilities at Dacre Lakeside
The site advertises itself to have a fishing lake. We caught nothing. We know what we are doing and we didn’t even get a bite. We literally tried everything. After speaking to an owner of a lodge on the site it turns out there’s very little in the lake and what there is tends to eat all the other fish. He’s rarely caught anything himself. Considering they advertise themselves as having a fishing lake this is very disappointing and needs to be addressed.
There is a small playground for the kids over near the main reception area. This is also next to a 7 hole pitch and putt golf course.
For an extra cost you can rent a canoe or a pedalo on the lake (life vests are included). The weather wasn’t quite on our side for this but it was certainly a popular lake with paddle boarders. The site also has bikes you can hire out.
There is a pizzeria on-site which was fabulous. It wasn’t cheap but it was well worth the money. It’s a relatively new building with decking overlooking the lake. It was a lovely spot and we found ourselves eating there on a couple of occassions. You can eat here even if you aren’t staying on-site so I’m sure we will return in 2021.
The main highlight for us was all the swans, ducks, moorheans and coots that were eager to be fed. We spent hours feeding them all and by the end of our stay our son had the ducks hand feeding from him.
Not all facilities are available all year round.
