We have visited Scarborough so many times over the past few years and every time I ask if we can go to Peasholm park. I gave up waiting for the other half to say yes and took our son there the other day. It didn’t disappoint. It’s such a lovely part of this North Yorkshire seaside town. Find out more about Peasholm Park Scarborough and things to do there.
Peasholm is near the north beach in Scarborough. There is a small pay and display car park which isn’t cheap (see below). You can, however, park there all day and visit the beach (short walk away), or take the North Bay railway to the Sea Life centre.
You could also take a tourist bus down to the south side where the amusements and harbour are located. If you get there before 10am you should be able to get a space in the car park.
Things To Do Peasholm Park
Peasholm Park, Scarborough originally opened in 1912 and it is an oriental themed municipal park. There is an island in the middle of the main lake with a pagoda and a large cascade waterfall. You can hire a pedalo to go around the lake. There’s plenty of geese and ducks so make sure you take some duck food.
My nearly 7 year old son did help a bit on the pedalo. Luckily the boats aren’t hard to peddle or steer. You get half an hour which is more than enough. Prices can vary but we paid £6.20 for 2/3 people in a boat.
There’s also a couple of places to have a go at mini golf. They’re both on a large putting green. If you want crazy golf just head in the direction of the sea and you will find one on the right near The Sands apartments.
Peasholm Park also includes Peasholm Glen which is a lovely wooded spot to walk around with lots of little waterfalls. If you keep heading back away from the sea you will come to a section with easy access water to paddle in (away from where the ducks live).
There’s a public toilet on-site which is free to use. When there isn’t a pandemic you can also hire rowing boats and canoes.
Naval Warfare Event
The Naval Warfare event, Battle of Peasholm, has been played out for half an hour three times a week during the summer season for over 80 years. The model boats used are mostly man-powered earning the fleet the title of “The smallest manned navy in the world”. This event returned in 2021 although it didn’t always go ahead as advertised.
