RSPB Bempton Cliffs | Visitor Guide

If you are looking for something to do for a couple of hours near Bridlington or Filey I can highly recommend RSPB Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire. It’s not just a walk along some stunning cliffs. It’s a chance to see literally hundreds of thousands nesting sea birds. The sights and sounds could possibly be like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. I love to visit every year and it’s different every time we visit.

The main thing to note is to check and double-check the weather. If you turn up in heavy cloud or mist you will struggle to see anything. A sunny or partly cloudy day is the ideal weather for visiting.

The best times to see the nesting birds is between March and October. We find early-mid July a really good time to visit. It’s a good time for spotting puffins and the birds always seem very active flying around.

There are a few accessible paths and they have three accessible platforms for viewing the birds. If you head straight out of the visitor centre and then head left you will find the accessible paths. The paths heading right are grassy and uneven.

They have installed plenty of wooden viewing platforms at some of the best viewpoints to see the birds. Don’t forget your binoculars! When the centre is open you can loan binoculars and also self-guided trails perfect for kids. If you want to spot a puffin concentrate on looking in small gaps in the cliffs.

Luckily they have signs helping you to identify the birds. As well as puffins you should spot gannets, guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills and more. Gannets are the biggest of the seabirds. They are very loud and their wing span is astounding.

The coastal path here goes on and on. You can choose to spend as little or as much time here as you please. We usually spend about 1.5 hours here walking and taking photos. A lot of people take their photography and bird spotting very seriously.
