Streetlife Museum Hull Review Guide

The Streetlife Museum is a FREE museum located in the museum quarter of the old town in Hull, East Yorkshire. It is an excellent museum and one of our favourite things to do when we visit Hull.

Sadly the first floor of the museum has been closed for a while now because of covid but hopefully, it will all be open again soon. I will update this post as soon as I hear that it has reopened. In the meantime, I have written the post relating back to when everything was open. It’s such a shame for such a great museum to have so much of it closed off. They really need to open it back up again properly soon.

Streetlife Museum is situated behind Wilberforce House and across from the Hull and East Riding Museum. It sits alongside a dock area where the Arctic Corsair ship can be seen. This is currently being restored. The plan is to eventually move it to a dry dock but no set date for its reopening has been set.

Inside the museum, there are 6 galleries across two floors. They take you through 200 years of our transport history with trains, trams, cars, carriages and more. There is so much to see and many of their displays have been done in a way to be interesting to children and to also be interactive.

There is a 1940s street with recreated shops and the whole museum makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in times. You can even climb inside some of the old carriages and trams.

It was lovely and quiet when we visited and it was great for spending some time at each exhibition. They use mannequins for some of the displays to make them feel even more life-like. All forms of transport have been covered in this museum.

You can even see some of the countries finest carriages in the stable area. The horses might not be real but the smells certainly are. Upstairs there is a coach you can sit in that you MUST sit in, there is a surprise that awaits all those that enter. Make sure there’s a member of staff nearby when you go in the carriage.

There is a gallery that looks at the history of bicycles. Another looks at motor cars from 1897 onwards. A favourite of ours is the railway gallery as parts of it are quite hands-on. It is a really interesting and interactive place to visit.

This is also worth popping £1 in. It’s a vintage car ride experience. The ride only lasts for a minute but it’s great fun. Make sure your kids can reach the steering wheel.
