Hobbit House at Baxby Manor Review Guide

The site is relatively easy to find. There are plenty of signposts and so long as you ignore your sat nav and follow the signs instead you should be ok. When you check-in you are given a book with rules and regulations of the site which we found to be a little over the top.

At the reception area, there is a small shop that sells some essentials plus cool drinks which is good as there is no fridge in the Hobbit pods. There is a communal fridge for meat and dairy but you are not allowed to put any drinks in there.

Everyone has a designated parking spot which is just a short walk away from the houses. We also had a key which is always essential when glamping.

There are 5 Hobbit houses in a curved line facing the direction of the stream. Each Hobbit pod has a round door, a green Astroturf roof and a chimney sticking out of the roof. There is a small log burning fire inside which we didn’t need to use. The pods are really quaint and actually quite spacious inside.

There is a table with benches plus a gas ring (gas canister is not included) with a kettle, cups and glasses plus plates and cutlery. You have to bring your own pans. You can cook over a wood fire outside. Wood can be purchased from the shop and you can hire the grate for cooking for £5.

No wood for the fire is provided nor were there any lighters or candles so this is something to consider for your visit. We didn’t take a torch for our trips to the toilet block as I used my mobile phone which was adequate enough.

The toilet and shower block is a short walk away. Luckily they are pretty strict and don’t allow shoes in there so the floor was always clean which was nice.

There are beds for up to four people. There is a double bed then two singles at the side and over the top of the double bed. No linen is supplied so we took our own sleeping bags and pillows plus a blanket each.

Outside there were wooden seats that you can put mini bean bags on to make them more comfortable. There was also a cog-like table and this was where the outside fire was for cooking over.

On the other side of the grass is a stream. We couldn’t access it from where we were but you could get to it further down and enjoy a spot of paddling. There were some kids there with nets which seemed like a fun idea.

There is no electricity at all in the glamping pods so take a charger pack with you if you can. Don’t forget to take some candles as well and some wood plus lighters if you don’t want to buy any from the shop. We also had a big problem with wasps and wished we’d taken some spray with us. It was quite warm but we couldn’t really open our doors.

There is free WI-FI over in the main reception building. They also have a separate pot washing room. There was also a small caravan that opened in the mornings for hot drinks, croissants and more. This is seasonal and may not always be open. Kids can also take part in craft activities on some of the days.

There is no playground on-site but there is one in the village which takes about 12 minutes to walk to. There is also a Tomahawk Steakhouse which we ate at one night. I can recommend the Chicken Katsu.

Baxby Manor is a great base for days out in the local area. We’d love to return to stay in the treehouse. It’s a lovely quiet site with no road noise at all. The only negative is all the rules and lack of ‘extras’. But it isn’t enough to make us not recommend it. We would certainly recommend a stay here, your kids will love the quirky accommodation. You can even take your dog to one of their pet-friendly Hobbit houses.

They are open from April through to late October.
