The Potions Cauldron York Potion Experience Review

The Potions Cauldron is only a very small attraction in the centre of York but it’s a really great place to stop for about 20 minutes and enjoy a tasty drink. Plus it’s a great place to visit for your wizard loving kids. The Potions Cauldron is located on the busy historic cobbled street, The Shambles in the heart of the City.

Harry Potter fans will also love to visit because the shop’s address is 9 3/4, Shambles. Just down from here is The Shop That Must Not be Named, full of Harry Potter gifts.

We were in York visiting a few places and while looking through my list of places we hadn’t yet visited I spotted this place. After having a look at their website I decided to book on their Potion Experience. They also own/run the Hole in Wand crazy golf that is located a short walk away. We are booked to give that a go during the October half-term as it was fully booked whenever we tried to visit this summer.

The Potions Cauldron is a very small shop, so small they only allow one family in at a time to look around. They have steam that comes out of the window every now and then and it certainly has a feel of Wizards and potions.

They run a few of the Potions Experience throughout the day and they are great for families. I would recommend the experience for children from around 5-6 years of age and over. My son is 8 and he loved it. You are shown into a room at the back of the shop and tickets are limited so it is a good idea to prebook. There were four small tables in the room and each had two people at them.

The experience starts with a quiz about what you do or don’t know about the Shambles and the history of the historic shop. The guide was very friendly and the kids certainly felt at ease around her. The experience involves you all making up your own magical drink. We were told about all the different magical options for our drinks and we then had to choose the one for us. Top tip – get your kids to pay attention as they will need to remember the options to choose one.

Adults can even choose to have a shot of alcohol in their potions, should they want one. Our experience lasted for around 20 minutes. For some of the experience, the guide was out of the room as she had to collect all the ingredients for the drinks. It was then down to us to pour what needed to be poured into our cup.

My drink involved adding a small amount of liquid to ice and then some popping candy. My son had chosen a drink that he added to a small amount of ice. The more he shook the drink the more it seemed to be ‘alive’. The drinks were like nothing we had tasted before and they were both delicious.

We also got to hold a glass with liquid in to see if we were magical and the kids got to choose a small gift. All under 11’s must be accompanied by at least one paying adult. The experience was priced at £4.99 for adults and £3.99 for children.

Considering the experience and the drink that was included I felt this was a fair price. The drinks were so nice we’d certainly book again. You can purchase the potions from their shop. A pack of 4 of the one my son had was £12.99 so his drink at £3.99 including the experience was certainly a good price. You can also purchase their drinks from the shop including Butterscotch beer.
