Uproar Playbarn at Yorkshire Wildlife Park Hive Review

The Hive is a new entrance area at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. In 2021 they moved their car park over to the opposite side of the park. At the same time, they added some new areas to the Wildlife Park and The Hive.

The Hive is a retail and leisure area. There are shops, toilets, a fantastic themed restaurant called Evolution. Plus the Uproar! Playbarn. The best thing about The Hive is that you can visit Evolution and Uproar without a ticket to the wildlife park. We visited recently to try out the playbarn and afterwards we had a meal at Evolution. Prebooking both in advance is highly recommended.

When we first visited we were a little unsure of where it was in relation to the Wildlife Park. It turned out it’s the same car park and the same way in for both so just pop Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Google Maps and you can’t go wrong.

The Hive does have a separate parking area which on busy days it can be worth parking in as it could make your walk-in shorter. Just beware, if you are staying for just a meal you will be OK but I think you are limited to just a couple of hours so we parked in the main car park as we were staying longer.

We wouldn’t have made the 9:30 slot so we had to book the 10:30. It was already pretty busy when we arrived and we struggled to find somewhere to sit. If you want to spend a few hours here it is definitely worth arriving early. It’s also worth prebooking as you won’t have to stand in the line at the cafe.

We were all really impressed with the theming of the soft play. There is a dinosaur theme running throughout and with low lighting it’s really atmospheric. There were also some realistic noises and movements from some of the dinosaurs. My 8 year old absolutely loved it. There are lots of different areas to explore. Some with bridges, dark tunnels and others with slides.

All the seating is positioned around the soft play so it was great for us as our son could play close by when he wanted to. I noticed that it was all really clean. There were people even resorting to sitting on the floor but it was so clean it didn’t really matter.

The volcano slide pictured below was the highlight for him. There are stairs to climb to the top and then you can slide down the fun tube slide or down the volcano itself. This is super super fast and there was a member of staff on station at the bottom almost all the time we were there. They were there to make sure the kids moved out the way as soon as possible so that they didn’t get knocked over.

The ball cannon was very popular and my son waited patiently for his turn. It’s great fun as when you hit a target with your ball it lights it up. This was really popular with the older kids although my son was one of the oldest there and we visited at the weekend.

They also have a dedicated baby and toddler area. This has been themed on the ice age and there are some fun slides for the younger visitor, soft shapes and more.

There is a really fun interactive Triceratops that the kids can design patterns on. My son loved this and spent ages working on his masterpiece. It’s a good job I took a photo as it didn’t last long.

There were quite a few dinosaurs hiding around the place. Plus a couple of huge Pteradactyls hanging from the ceiling. I loved how they’d even made it look like the earth and the sky using scenery around the room. There is also a wooden obstacle course. My son would have loved a go on this but sadly due to the lack of seating most of it was being sat on.

There is a cafe next to the play area. This was quite limited for food and the queue was huge at lunchtime. We were very relieved that we had a lunch booked at Evolution. We were there from 10:30 am until 12:40 pm and I later realised that we’d slightly outstayed our welcome. According to the website, bookings are for two hours but no one pointed that out to us when we were there.

There is a security gate with a staff member letting people in and out. I would like to say this is 100% safe but when we left there was no one there and adults were letting themselves in and out. If my son had been younger I wouldn’t have been confident letting him run around by himself. The toilets are also on the other side of this gate.

All in all, it is an excellent indoor soft play. We would certainly return.
