Wolds Way Lavender is one of our favourite places to visit. There is so much more to it than it sounds and there are lots of fun things to do there for families. They are located a few miles east of Malton in North Yorkshire.
They are open from April until late September and their lavender usually starts to flower from mid-June and throughout August and September. We visited the third week of June and while the lavender hadn’t fully bloomed it still smelt amazing and looked good as well.
Wolds Way Lavender Things To Do Review
When you arrive make sure you purchase a ticket for their miniature railway. The Woldie Willows Lavender Express is a 7.25~ narrow gauge railway. Booking is on arrival at £2 per person but no one had mentioned this to us. Luckily there were still timeslots available. The train even has a tunnel which is always a bonus for my son. Trust me your kids will want to go on it and it’s worth £2 each extra.
There are a few paths that go around the lavender on their 12-acre site. They have 6 acres of planted lavender and while you are wandering the paths you will come across all manner of things to do and lots of different views of the lavender.
We especially enjoyed watching their wild birds feed from their bird hide wall. There is a big sign to help you identify what birds you have spotted.
They have a wooden adventure playground with a wooden train and an assault course. My son loved this and he must have gone around at least 8 times. The challenge is to get around without your feet touching the floor. Near here there is also den building and a pretty woodland walk.
Another activity we found was a large pool table with balls you can try and kick into the holes. This was great fun and we’d not come across anything similar before.
They also had a fun 9 hole footgolf course. There is a basket of balls by the course and you just pick one up and away you go. There were plenty of balls available. Near to this, they had picnic benches with umbrellas plus a sandpit and a mud kitchen.
They also have a natural willow maze where you have to find 10 stations and answer all the questions. There were also some fun ‘bendy’ mirrors at the start of the maze. We may have cheated a little but it was good fun.
There were some wonderful smelling flowers with sculptures set amongst them.
There is also a really idyllic fish pond that we sat next to on a couple of occasions including sitting to taste the excellent ice cream that they sell. It was a lovely end to a lovely day out for us. They also have another larger pond where we spotted some tadpoles and some huge fish.
Since we have visited they have now reinstated their giant games in the willow maze. These include limbo, drafts, hopscotch, chess, noughts and crosses and more.
